Afterlife Is A U-Turn

South Korean television channel tvN is holding a marathon screening of Guardian: The Lonely And Great God today and tomorrow, the first and second days of Chinese New Year.

Although I had followed the show closely when it originally aired from 2 December 2016 to 21 January 2017, this is the first time I am re-watching it on a TV screen. The higher resolution indeed adds to its entertainment value.

The blog title comes from a quote in Episode 4, at the end of what I will refer to as “the exit interview in the tea house”. Goblin (Gong Yoo) is waiting in place of Grim Reaper (Lee Dong-wook). An old man opens the door and, upon entering, appears as the boy whose life Goblin had intervened in back in the sixties when he was in Paris.

“You can go through the door you walked in. Afterlife is a U-turn.”
